Junior Golf Championships announces additional exemptions from AJGA and Optimist International for their Lone Star Junior Championship
Junior Golf Championships is very excited to announce that their Lone Star Junior Championship will serve as the North Texas qualifier for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship. The 2 day, 36-hole Lone Star Junior Championship will be played May 28-29th at the award-winning Tribute Golf Club in The Colony, Texas. Besides being the qualifier for The Optimist, the Lone Star also has been awarded one AJGA Performance Based Exemption for the Boys Championship (14-18) and Girls Championship (13-18) divisions. As always, this will also be a Junior Golf Scoreboard ranked event.
The winner from each age division will receive an invitation to the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship played at the PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Junior Golf Championships will use the age groups used at The Optimist for the Lone Star Junior Championship. The age groups for the boys will be 10-11, 12-13, 14-15, and 16-18. The age groups for the girls will be 10-12, 13-14, and 15-18. A golfer’s division is based on his/her age as of the last day of the applicable international championship tournament. Cutoff dates are July 25, 2011 (boys 10-11, 12-13 & 14-15 and girls 10-12 & 13-14) and July 31, 2011 (boys 16-18 and girls 15-18). Golfers are permitted to “play up” one division, but must qualify in the higher division. Nine-year olds may “play up” into the Boys 10-11 or Girls 10-12 division.
The Optimist Junior Golf Program is an exciting and unique junior golf program for ages 10-18. More than 5,000 boys and girls throughout the United States and Canada and in several foreign countries compete in official Optimist qualifying tournaments. The best of these golfers, along with international golfers from around the world, advance to the annual Optimist International Junior Golf Championships. The Optimist is one of the largest and most prestigious junior golf events in the world. In addition to top-level tournament golf, participants have the opportunity to meet new friends and to have a great deal of fun. Each year, more than 650 junior golfers from 30 countries participate in the Optimist.
The Optimist International Junior Golf Championships (known as Optimist Junior World Golf Championships from 1978-1994) has a long and impressive list of past champions. That list includes PGA and LPGA stars Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, David Toms, Lorena Ochoa, Notah Begay III, Beth Bauer, Stacy Prammanasudh, Brittany Lincicome, and Jeff Overton.
PGA National Resort & Spa, located in Palm Beach Gardens, Palm Beach County, Florida, is the home of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships. Combined with a dedication to junior golf that few golf destinations can match, PGA National is the perfect location for the Optimist. Besides being located next to the international headquarters of the PGA of America, the resort’s championship golf courses have hosted the PGA Championships, the PGA Seniors’ Championships, the Ryder Cup, the Grand Slam of Golf, the World Big Tour Match, the PGA Club Professional Championship and the PGA Junior Championship, and the resort is now the home course of the PGA TOUR’s Honda Classic. In addition, Palm Beach County is rated as having more golf courses than any county in the United States.
